Suitable work setup with labelled safety controls—not just gloves and a mask
Open My Product Safety Requirements
My workspace and protective equipment meet every product's requirements.
Clean and inspect the repair area
- Wash away dirt and allow the surface to dry.
- Clean with the approved surface-cleaning materials, following their instructions.
- Inspect for rust, loose paint, cracks, dents and previous repair material.
- Identify the repair area and the larger preparation, colour and clearcoat areas using your tutorial.
Do not sand wax, grease or other contamination into the surface. The included microfiber cloth is not a replacement for an approved cleaner.
Panel marked with repair, preparation, colour and clearcoat zones
The surface is clean and dry, and I understand the area that needs treatment.
Prepare the surface and mask nearby areas
Follow your product-specific sanding sequence.
- Remove loose or damaged coatings and feather sound paint edges as directed.
- Use the supplied block or compatible disc holder to control the sanding shape.
- Remove sanding dust and clean again as specified.
- Protect adjacent areas from sanding debris and overspray. Replace dirty masking before spraying.
Which abrasive should I use?
| Included grit | Role, where specified by your repair plan |
|---|---|
| 120 | Initial shaping or coarser preparation. |
| 240 | Refining filler and earlier sanding scratches. |
| 320 | Further refinement or preparation for primer. |
| 600 | Final preparation where approved for the primer and colour system. |
Do not use every grit automatically. Your substrate and product instructions determine the sequence. Do not wet-sand unless both the abrasive and coating instructions permit it.
Using the razor blades
Use a suitable blade holder for approved tasks such as trimming masking material off the vehicle. Do not cut tape against painted panels or use loose blades to scrape the finish. Keep unused blades protected and dispose of used blades in a suitable sharps container.
Correct block-sanding position, feathered edge and safe masking preparation
The surface is prepared as specified, and surrounding areas are protected.
Apply body filler — only where needed
No dent or low area? Skip this step if your repair plan allows.
- Confirm that the exposed substrate is approved for your filler.
- Mix a small batch with the supplied hardener using the exact product ratio.
- Apply with the spreader, keeping within the permitted thickness.
- Allow it to cure for the specified conditions.
- Shape and refine it using the approved abrasive sequence.
Do not estimate hardener ratios or add extra hardener to speed up curing.
Approved mixing method and a thin filler application
Full Tutorial: Filler Chapter
The filler has cured, the shape is correct and there are no obvious high edges or deep scratches.
Correct small imperfections with finishing putty
Finishing putty is for approved minor imperfections—not deep dents or rust holes.
- Check which substrates your putty can cover.
- Mix with hardener if the product requires it.
- Apply only where needed, within its maximum thickness.
- Allow it to cure fully.
- Sand, remove dust and clean as directed.
For an approved system permitting this sequence, putty goes before spot priming. If your product requires a different sequence, follow its instructions.
Small pinholes before putty and the corrected surface after sanding
The repair is smooth, fully cured and ready for its specified primer.
Apply your approved primer
AUTO's has selected the approved primer shade for your colour.
- Check masking and surface cleanliness.
- Prepare the primer exactly as instructed.
- Apply using the specified distance, coats and flash times.
- Allow the primer to dry or cure as required.
Your primer instructions
Aerosol primer: Follow its shaking, preparation and spraying instructions.
Liquid primer: Use its specified activator and any required reducer.
Never apply the colour's 1:1 mixing ratio to primer.
Correct primer coverage over the prepared repair
Full Tutorial: Primer Chapter
Primer coverage is satisfactory, and the required drying or curing stage is complete.
Prepare the primed surface
- Sand the primer only when its instructions allow.
- Use the specified grit and method to produce an even surface.
- If you expose filler or bare substrate, follow the repair instructions for re-priming.
- Remove dust and clean using approved materials.
- Refresh masking as needed.
600-grit abrasive: Use it here only if approved for your system. It is not a cured-clearcoat polishing abrasive.
Scuff pad: Use only on the surfaces and at the stage specified in your instructions.
Tack cloth: If permitted, pass it lightly over the prepared surface immediately before the relevant coating stage. Do not scrub or press hard enough to transfer residue.
Properly prepared primer beside scratches and sand-throughs that need correction
The surface is evenly prepared, clean, dry and free from unresolved sand-throughs.
Test your colour on a spray-out card
Do not make the vehicle your first colour test.
- Prepare the included card with the specified ground colour or primer.
- Prepare your colour according to its instructions.
- Spray the card using the technique and coverage planned for the vehicle.
- Apply clearcoat to the test where required, using the same safety controls as the repair.
- Let the test dry as specified.
- Compare it with the vehicle in daylight and from different angles.
Factory variants, fading and previous paintwork can affect the match.
For PRO colour
Use the ratio shown on your supplied product instructions. Where the supplied system specifies 1:1 colour to reducer by volume, measure equal volumes. Stir and strain as directed. Do not use that ratio for primer, clearcoat or a different colour system.

I have checked the spray-out and am satisfied with the colour.
Apply the colour
- Recheck cleanliness, masking and safe working conditions.
- Prepare the aerosol or liquid colour as instructed.
- Follow the specified spray distance, overlap, coats and flash times.
- Use the technique shown for your colour type.
- Allow the required flash before clearcoat.
Your colour instructions
DIY: Follow the aerosol-specific tutorial. PRO: Follow the specified spray-gun setup and liquid-colour tutorial.
Do not try to achieve coverage with one heavy coat. If you see runs, lifting, contamination or another defect, stop and check the troubleshooting guide before adding more material.

Coverage is even, no defect needs correction, and the colour is ready for clearcoat.
Apply the 2K clearcoat
- Recheck Step 2 before activating the can.
- Confirm you have enough clearcoat for the planned area.
- Follow the tutorial's clearcoat boundaries; do not assume that a small colour repair means clearcoat can stop at the same edge.
- Activate and shake the aerosol exactly as its label directs.
- Record the activation time.
- Apply the specified coats and flash times within the product's usable life.
Your clearcoat instructions
Activated at: __________ Use-by time according to product instructions: __________
Do not activate the clearcoat early. Do not improvise a clearcoat blend or spray over an unresolved colour defect.
Clearcoat activation sequence and planned coverage area
Full Tutorial: Clearcoat Chapter
The clearcoat is applied, and the repair is protected while it cures.
Let it cure, then finish only if needed
- Leave the repair undisturbed under the specified curing conditions.
- Remove masking at the recommended stage, without pulling against soft coating.
- Follow the product's separate guidance for handling, driving, washing, polishing and waxing.
- Inspect the finish only after the required cure.
Dry to the touch does not mean fully cured.
Using the included cutting cream
- Use it only if the clearcoat instructions permit polishing and the repair has reached the required cure. Follow the approved applicator and polishing method.
- Polishing is optional—not a required step.
- Keep away from edges where the coating can be thinner.
- Do not use the included 600-grit abrasive to remove clearcoat defects.
Runs, dust nibs or substantial texture may require additional products or professional correction. Dispose of chemical waste, activated aerosols and blades according to product and local requirements.
