Sanding is where a lot of otherwise clean paint jobs go sideways. Every layer in a modern refinish system behaves differently: some layers need to be sanded to bond and lay flat, and others must never be touched. Sand the wrong coat — or sand the right coat too early — and you trade a few minutes of impatience for hours of buffing, re-coating, or stripping and starting over.
This guide walks each layer of a standard primer → basecoat → clearcoat system, tells you what to do, and finishes with the professional technique body shops use to pull real depth out of a clear. Use it as a working map, and read on for the one rule that overrides everything else.
Primer — Sand After 24 Hours
Primer is your foundation, and it is meant to be sanded. Its whole job is to fill minor imperfections, build a uniform surface, and give the basecoat a flat, keyed substrate to grip. After you have laid your primer coats, give the film time to properly cure — as a general rule, allow around 24 hours before you block or sand it. Cutting that short means sanding into primer that is still gassing off solvent, which loads your paper, leaves a gummy surface, and can cause shrinkage or edge-mapping later.
Once cured, block it flat. This is the stage where you chase and kill every wave, pinhole, and low spot. Do the work here and the color and clear that follow simply lay over a surface that is already dead flat.
Basecoat — Do Not Sand
Basecoat is the color layer, and as a rule you do not sand it. Basecoat is designed to be top-coated with clear while it is still fresh — it is a bond coat, not a finish coat. It lays down thin and matte on purpose, and clear is what buries it and brings the gloss.
This matters even more with metallics and pearls. The look of a metallic depends entirely on how the aluminum flake orients as the coat flashes and lays down. Sanding a metallic basecoat physically disturbs and cuts that flake, destroying the even orientation you sprayed for. The result is blotching, mottling, and sand scratches that telegraph straight up through the clear once it goes on — a defect you cannot buff out because it lives under the clear. If you get a piece of dirt or a run in your base, the fix is almost always to let it flash, scuff only the affected spot if the product allows it, and re-coat — not to block the color.
Clear Coat — Sand After 24 Hours to 1 Week
Clear is where you earn the shine. If you want to remove dirt nibs, orange peel, or a minor run and then polish to a glass-flat finish, you sand and buff the clear — but timing matters. Let the clear cure before you cut it: generally somewhere from 24 hours to about one week depending on the product, the hardener, and your booth conditions. Sand too soon and the clear is still soft, so it loads paper, rolls, and can shrink and re-reveal your scratches days later.
When it is ready, work the surface up through progressively finer grits — never jump straight to a fine grit and never skip steps. Each grit removes the scratch pattern left by the one before it. This is the Grit Ladder:
1500 → 2000 → 3000 → 5000
- 1500 — knocks down orange peel, nibs, and levels the surface.
- 2000 — refines the 1500 scratch and starts flattening.
- 3000 — removes the coarser marks and brings up an even satin.
- 5000 — final refinement so the buff cuts fast and clean to full gloss.
Keep the surface and paper wet, use a firm backing block on flat panels, and rinse often so grit does not put in a stray deep scratch. Climb the whole ladder, then move to compound and polish. The finer you finish sanding, the less you fight the buffer to get a swirl-free, mirror result.

The “Flow Coat” Method
Want serious depth — the kind that looks like you can reach into the panel? Pros use a flow coat. Instead of relying on a single clear layer, you sand between clear coats with 800-grit to knock the first clear dead flat, then lay a fresh clear coat over that perfectly level base.
Because the second clear flows out over an already-flat surface instead of following the peel underneath, it lays down glass-smooth and reads with far more depth and mirror. Follow the clear's recoat window and re-activation instructions, respect flash times, and finish with the grit ladder above for a show-quality result.
One Rule Above All
Cure times and sanding windows vary with the specific product, the hardener/activator, film build, humidity, and — most of all — temperature. The 24-hour and 24-hour-to-one-week figures here are general shop guidelines, not gospel. Always defer to the manufacturer's Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for the exact product you are spraying.
